Within MakeMusic Cloud's notation tool, Compose, there are tools dedicated to adding annotations on music. These are designed to allow teachers to leave notes on sheet music that would typically be added to printed music, such as playing suggestions, highlights, cues, for students to reference while practicing.

These annotations are meant to be used on assignments, so they will be visible to students when the content they are added to are assigned to students and then opened in the Practice app. When the assignment is opened, they are visible by default but can be toggled off by the student if need be.

These tools can found when opening a file in the Compose app, clicking on the Score menu, and choosing the Annotations tool option.

When this is opened, a floating palette containing the Annotation tools will open. This can be moved anywhere in the music viewing area.

1. Selection tool – used to select any annotations that are already created. Once selected, annotations can moved, resized, and have their color and line thickness changed.

2. Pen tool – used for drawing free lines.

3. Highlighter tool – make highlight marks over items on the sheet music.

4. Text tool – creates a text block to add basic text notes.

5. Comments tool – this creates text block similar to text notes, but within a comment bubble that can collapse.

6. Line thickness – when line-based annotation is selected, this allows for changing the thickness of the line.

7. Color picker – when an annotation is selected, this allows you to change the color of the specific item.

8. Audio comment – this creates an audio comment which allows you to add an audio-based comment on the music that the student can replay when in the assignment. The audio is recorded when clicking on the score and pressing the annotation's record button. Playback and delete are also available on the note for review and removal.

9. Undo last action.

10. Redo last action.

Annotations added a score can either be attached to the score itself or to a specific part. When an annotation tool is selected, hovering over a location with the mouse will show a blue highlight box that indicates the part and measure that annotation will be attached to. The image below shows a Pen tool annotation added to the first measure of the Solo Violin part. This will only be visible on that part when the assignment is opened by the player.

It is recommended to add annotations for specific parts while in the part view for that instrument. This ensure the best location accuracy of the annotation for the player.

When the assignment is opened, if there are annotations added to the player's part, these will be visible by default. Visibility can be toggle with the button near the upper right-hand corner of the Practice app viewer.

Annotations are only visible in the Practice app and cannot be edited there.
