One of the great benefits to using MakeMusic Cloud is the immediate visual feedback that is provided for each recording. The visual assessment uses different colors and spacing to communicate to students what was played correctly and what was played incorrectly.

Pitch Assessment

When recording in MakeMusic Cloud, the recorded noteheads will turn red or green to provide pitch assessment. After a take is recorded, the post-take dialog displays, showing the assessment score, along with the count of wrong, early, and late notes.

Green noteheads indicate that the correct pitch was played at the correct time.

Red noteheads indicate incorrect pitch. The vertical placement of a red notehead on the staff indicates the pitch that was played.

Detailed Assessment

MakeMusic Cloud's Practice app has a detailed assessment breakdown for notes that were marked wrong (red notes) or late (yellow notes). This is displayed as a floating dialog window that appears above or below the incorrect notes.

This dialog has several features to help understand why notes were marked incorrectly.

  • If a note is marked early or late, this will be stated in the dialog.

  • If only a partial amount of the correct pitch and duration was heard, the message "We did not hear enough of the correct note" is displayed. A representation of the note's audio is shown as a linear timeline-based graph with green coloring representing audio that matched the pitch, and red where it did not.

  • If a wrong note is heard, a message stating what note was heard and the note that was expected is displayed.

  • The playback buttons for Original or Your Take will playback the audio for the measure that the currently selected note is in. The Original button plays back the My Part for the measure, and Your take plays back the user's recording for comparison purposes.

The dialog can be opened from the Show me button on the post-take dialog [need image], or by clicking the Detailed assessment button located under the My takes menu. When the detailed assessment dialog opens, it displays on the first incorrect note.

To navigate the dialog, you can use the left and right arrows or click directly on any red note. Clicking the Detailed Feedback button or any menu option will close the dialog.

Rhythmic Assessment

When recording in MakeMusic Cloud, yellow noteheads will appear to indicate correct pitches that are played early or late. The horizontal placement of the notehead indicates whether the note was played early or late.

Visual rhythmic assessment applies to correct pitches played out of time. Any incorrect pitch is marked red regardless of the timing.

Color Blind Mode

Visual assessment in MakeMusic Cloud is color blind-accessible. To turn on this feature select the Display tab on the Practice page. Select Color Blind Mode.

Color Blind Mode will adjust the coloration of the visual assessment for color blind accessibility. The cursor will appear light purple. Correctly assessed notes will appear blue. Incorrect notes will appear light pink, with vertical placement on the staff indicating the pitch played. Early or late notes will appear green, with horizontal placement on the staff indicating the timing.
