The audio/video-only option, available on the Create page, is an assignment type in which students can record a video or audio clip to submit to teachers without requiring content (either from our catalog or user-generated content).
To create this type of assignment, first open the Create page and choose the Record Audio/Video option, then set up the options in the Record Assigner page (The Record app is the location students complete the assignment), and assign to classes and students. On the student side, this will show in the assignments just like performance assignments, but will take them to the Record app, rather than the Practice app, to complete the assignment.
The Record Assigner Page
- Assignment Name – The title that your students will see for the assignment. This field is required.
- Instructions – The instructions that you provide here will be visible to the students when they open the assignment in the Record app.
-
Assignment Type – Video or Audio. These options control the requested media type you want the students to use. By default, Video is selected, which will record both audio and video, but you can also select Audio only.
Be aware: With the video assignment type, students still have the option to deny the video consent option when opening the assignment in the Record app. This permits them to turn their cameras on or off at any point and revert the assignment to audio only.
- Settings – Length of Recording. The time set here controls the maximum length of the video or audio clip the students can record for the assignment. This means that a length of 01:00 prevents students from recording a clip longer than one minute. This defaults to one minute with a maximum of 20 minutes allowed.
-
Grading options – Ungraded or Review each submission (or Custom rubric). The grading options allow you to control the point values that are used in your Gradebook. These options function similarly to MakeMusic Cloud's performance assignment grading options. Selecting an option is required.
Assign to Students
The second page of the Record Assigner functions the same as a performance assignment and provides options for the due date, both the initial due date and the late date, and which students and classes this is assigned to.
The Record App
Record assignments display to students on their assignments page. When they click Start, they are taken to the Record app to complete the assignment.
When the student first opens the Record app, they will be guided through the microphone and camera permissions so that the app has access to these tools from the browser. The video recording consent agreement shows after the device permissions.
In the Record app, the students will see the following information:
- Assignment name
- Due date
- Time limit
- Grading type and point value
- Instructions
In the Record video area, there are options for interacting with the video and audio controls.
- My Takes – This drop-down menu contains all takes recorded in the student's session and allows switching between them
- Download – Allows the selected track to be downloaded to the user's device.
- Delete – Deletes the currently selected take.
- New Take – After the first take has been recorded, this will be visible in the video window (audio display area). Clicking New take will clear the current in the video player and change the Play button to a Record button.
- Submit – This will submit the video or audio take that is currently selected in the My takes list. Once a take is submitted, it cannot be undone.
- Camera – This button toggles the camera on and off allowing users to switch between video and audio only recording. If this is a video assignment, students are warned when shutting this off and ask them confirm with them if this the choice they want.
- Record – The record button is available when the video or audio player is ready to record a new take. If a take is loaded, a play button with a navigation slider is here in place of record.
- Microphone – The microphone button provides options to choose from the available audio input devices connected to the device
