We are aware of an issue in which MusicXML files exported from Noteflight will playback incorrectly in Compose and the Practice app. You will find that transposing instruments’ parts (i.e. Bb Trumpet, Eb Alto Sax, etc.) will often look correct, but will sound incorrect, especially when played alongside non-transposing instruments.

For example, when in Concert Bb, Eb instruments (like the Alto Sax in the image below) should read in G yet still sound in Concert Bb. The issue is playback will sound in Concert G.

The following steps are intended to show how to rebuild the playback for each transposing instrument so that their playback is correct as well as their written pitch:

  1. Open your score in Compose
  2. Click Score
  3. Select the Staves and measures tool
  4. Click the pencil icon in the first measure of each transposing instrument.
  5. Make sure the correct instrument is selected (i.e. Clarinets should have "Bb Clarinet" selected).
  6. Under Transposition options, check that the Transposition interval is correct (i.e. Bb for Clarinets).
  7. Click Keep notation unchanged so that the same written pitches remain.
  8. Click Apply changes.
  9. Select the Key signature tool
  10. Click on the first measure and set the key signature to the correct concert key.
  11. Click Apply. This will remove any unnecessary accidentals.
  12. Repeat these steps for each transposing instrument in your score.

Our team has recently deployed a fix for this. Now, when you import MusicXML files created in Noteflight, transposing instruments will playback properly alongside non-transposing instruments. Files imported prior to this fix (October 17, 2024) will still experience this behavior and will either need to be re-uploaded or rebuilt using the workaround steps in this article
